Another quirk of fate that prompted my ‘Year of New’ was a friend on Facebook doing a shout-out for a particular music festival, Earth Frequency, was still looking for volunteers.
Now.... even though I was born in the VERY late 60's, I still see myself as a child of the 80's - stretch denim, mullets, blonde tips and hair metal.... and F.T.W. meant 'Fuck The World'! Even as I'm writing this, I'm listening to a compilation of Whitesnake, Def Leppard and Van Hagar...... aaaaahhhhhh Sammy..... a TRUE rock GOD!!!!
So why does a die hard metal head volunteer for a music festival....? Well, multiple reasons really.
1 - I've NEVER been to a music festival before, let alone a 4 day camping one. Growing up in country Victoria 30 years ago, music festivals weren't really known about. Hell.... I'd never even heard of a B and S ball, and Schoolies Week hadn't really become a 'thing' yet.
2 - Music festivals are expensive!? And most of the people I've been friends with over the years haven't been festival types. So what was the point of me spending hundreds of $$$$ just to fly solo and listen to music I wasn't sure I'd like. As a Vollie I'd be sure to meet and mingle with others and have a reason to suss out the place properly.
3 - Being a Vollie makes it cheaper :-) For EFF, it's $250 and you're required to do 12 hours volunteer work in whatever section you've been allocated. Do your 12 hours over the 3-4 days, and you get your $200 dollar 'bond' back. Simple maths really. For $50 (plus incidentals, and food, and grog, and gear) I'd get 3-4 days camping, music and hopefully a kick ass experience. All an hours ride from home.
4 - Ahhhhhh I didn't actually realise it was mostly all Electronic Dance Music. BUT... once I did, I was kinda curious about a group of people who were all 'save the planet, eat holistic and organic, peace, love and mung beans... but their music RELIED on electricity...?
5 - A then lady friend, who is now my girlfriend, had mentioned how she'd love to go to a music festival one day and how much she loved camping. Now... NOoooooo.... I didn't do it JUST for a woman ok. This particular young lady can't get out as much as she would like to, so I figured this would be the perfect opportunity for me to check out what it was like re facilities, location and the like. Plus, I'd have friends 'on the ground' for next year for both me and Lauren.
Looks like a win-win so far. Plus I had an excuse to upgrade my trailbike touring gear 😉
Stay tuned boys and girls, the festival is Feb 16th-19th. I'll take a few hundred pics and continue with 'Part 2' 😉
